Ans : The day on which animal advocates all around the globe will educate holiday shoppers about the cruel fur and leather industries. Every year, the fur industry heartlessly kills 50 million animals—many of whom are skinned alive. The leather industry is no friend to animals either—the global leather industry slaughters more than a billion animals annually.

In 2010, the quota for the Canadian seal hunt was 388,200, but the new European Union ban on seal products caused many sealers to stay home, and about 67,000 seals were killed. The ban is now the subject of a lawsuit before the European General Court and is temporarily suspended.

Ans : In 2009, about 20 billion sea animals were killed (by the US) for human consumption . . . Note that both the land and sea animal numbers are those killed by the US, not killed for US consumption (since we import and export much of the slaughter). Animals killed worldwide for Americans' food in 2009 amount to 8.3 billion land animals and 51 billion sea animals. (So, a total of about 59 billion animals.) You can see that those imports and exports make a huge difference.

Ans : Estimates range from 17 million to 70 million to 100 million. The numbers are difficult to estimate because the majority of animals used in research - rats and mice - are unreported because they are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act.

According to The Humane Society of the US, 3-4 million cats and dogs are killed in shelters in the United States every year.

Inbreeding : Minks are also inbred in the quest for certain coat colors, which leads to genetic defects. Hedlund white minks are deaf, and the pastel mink suffers from “screw neck,” in which the animals tilt their heads up because of a lack of gravity receptors in the inner ear.
Confinement : In the wild, a male mink has a range of approximately 2,500 acres. A female has a range of 40 acres. On a fur farm, a mink is typically confined in a cage measuring 12 inches by 18 inches.
Methods of Killing : Methods of killing on fur farms include breaking the animal’s neck, gassing, lethal injection, genital electrocution and anal electrocution. In 2008, New York became the first state in the U.S. to ban electrocution as a method of killing on fur farms.
